PRINCIPLES

  • Minis rugby is a modified version of rugby designed for boys and girls, from age 5 (Reception) to age 11 (School Year 6), focusing on fun, skill development and safe participation in a less contact-intensive environment, using smaller balls and pitches to progressively introduce concepts like tag rugby, rucks, scrums, and tackling.
  • Minis Rugby aims to teach social skills and promote the core rugby values of TEAMWORK, RESPECT, ENJOYMENT, DISCIPLINE, SPORTSMANSHIP in an inclusive, community setting, ensuring children enjoy the game and build confidence. With this in mind, coaches should embrace a player-centered approach and ahere to the RFU Codes of practice.
  • Minis sections in clubs typically build a family-like atmosphere, encouraging volunteering and community involvement, as the children prepare for the transition to Junior Rugby at Under 12 (school year 7), when boys and girls separate into their own Age Grade bands.
